A Webby Award winning site that teaches children about design by actually allowing them to create
their own fashion, products, logos and buildings.
This project won a Webby Award for best Children’s site 2004. The 3D&I site was designed for
PBS kids to teach children about design related fields like architecture, fashion, product design
and graphic design.
The challenge was how to get into the mind of 9 to 12 year olds and get them to participate and interact
on the site. We conducted many focus groups to find out what kids wanted and how they reacted to rapid
prototypes. We also created 2 cartoon characters based on a work and a bird, that encouraged the kids to
look at each object from the point of view of aesthetics, functionality.
The site was structured on 3 axis – “discover”, “do” and “discuss”. The “discover” section would include
a lot of information on the history of design. The “do” section allowed children to participate in design projects
like designing a tree house or a logo. The “discuss” section was a place that kids could go to discuss design
and exhibit their work. Each activity module was programmed in flash and allowed children to select, drag
and drop objects to create their own designs.
A training session was conducted at the Cooper-Hewitt museum introducing teachers to this website and how
to include it in their curriculums.
